The Students’ Union of Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), has intensified efforts to tackle what it described as the “exorbitant” cost of student accommodation in the university’s host community.
The move follows a series of complaints from students over rising rents for off-campus housing.
In a statement issued by the union’s Chief Press Secretary, Awolumate Oluwaseun, on behalf of the union president, Comrade Salami Akeem, popularly known as Ologbon, the union said it had taken proactive steps to address the situation.
According to the statement, the union president, accompanied by the Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Samson Laleye, who was represented by the Sub Dean, Mr. Ikuegbebe Segun, recently inspected a student lodge near the Glo Mast in Akungba after receiving reports that a single-room self-contained apartment was being rented for ₦500,000.
Describing the amount as “highly outrageous,” the union delegation assessed the building’s facilities, including Gerard roofing, POP ceiling, kitchen cabinet, toilet fittings, lighting, wardrobe, and aluminium windows.
At a meeting with the landlord, a revised rent of ₦450,000 was proposed. However, the union countered with an offer of ₦350,000, which it said was more reasonable given current economic realities.
The union said it is now awaiting the landlord’s final response.
“We urge students to report any cases of excessive rent or landlord harassment to the union,” the statement added.
