The NYSC Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Community Development Service (CDS) group in Iseyin Local Government Area of Oyo State has organised an interschool quiz competition to promote quality education and improve academic performance among secondary school students.
The event, held on Saturday, July 12, at the Iseyin Local Government Secretariat Hall, brought together students from both public and private schools across the town.
Anchored on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4, which advocates inclusive and equitable quality education, the initiative was designed to enhance student confidence, stimulate academic excellence, and encourage knowledge exchange.
A total of seven schools participated in the competition. They included Islamic Girls High School, Aseyin High School, Muslim High School 1 and 2, Baptist Secondary School Koso, Amao Comprehensive College, and King David’s Academy. The schools were randomly selected to ensure fairness and inclusivity.
At the end of a competitive session, Amao Comprehensive College emerged as the overall winner with 59 points. King David’s Academy came second with 55 points, while Muslim High School 2 secured third place with 50 points.

Students and Teachers Hail Initiative
Taofeek Oladapo, a student of Aseyin High School who attended the competition as an observer, commended the experience, describing it as inspiring.
“This is my first time attending a quiz competition,” he said. “Although I was meant to participate, watching from the audience taught me a lot. It made me realise the importance of self-confidence and has motivated me to prepare better for future opportunities.”
Teachers and school officials also praised the organisers for what they described as a timely and impactful intervention in the education sector.
Adefabi Bolanle, a staff member of Amao Comprehensive College, described the programme as an eye-opener.
“This kind of exposure is what students need to strive for academic excellence. Many of them have never attended a programme like this. For our school, this is a first, and the students have gained a lot.”
Similarly, Miss Oluwayemisi Adetoyeke commended the NYSC SDG team for the initiative, stating that such engagements prepare students for the challenges ahead.
“It builds critical thinking and boosts their confidence. I hope this becomes a regular event,” she said.
Corps Members Explain Purpose of Programme
President of the NYSC SDG CDS group in Iseyin, Adetutu Bakare, said the initiative was born out of concern over students’ declining interest in academics.
“We noticed low morale among students and wanted to inspire them to be more curious about their world and their studies. As corps members serving under the SDG platform, this aligns with our responsibility to promote education and community development,” she said.
The chief judge of the competition, Miss Aluko Ire of Baptist Secondary School, Koso, described the event as a platform for self-discovery among students.
“Some of them said it was their first time attending a programme like this. If this is sustained, it will greatly improve the academic outlook of students in this community,” she noted.
Quiz master and programme coordinator, Kasali Muftau, also a member of the SDG CDS group, appreciated the support received from various quarters.
“We thank all the participating schools, our sponsors, corps members and fellow SDG executives who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to make this event a success,” he said.
The programme ended with an award presentation, where winning schools received educational materials and certificates of participation.
