A copy of the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) reportedly belonging to the Governor of Edo State, Monday Okpebholo, has resurfaced online, reigniting scrutiny over his academic credentials.
The certificate, dated June 2008 and issued by Liberty Comprehensive College, Jos, shows a record of poor academic performance, prompting widespread debate on social media regarding the governor’s educational background and competence to govern.

The release of the document followed recent controversial statements made by Governor Okpebholo during a public address in which he expressed uncertainty over the security of Edo State and made remarks that many interpreted as a threat to the life of former presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi.
The governor’s comment, made openly on camera has since drawn condemnation from several civic voices, who described it as undemocratic and dangerous to public discourse. Critics argue that such statements, especially from a sitting governor, set a troubling precedent.
“There must be accountability. If such threats had been made by an opposition figure, security agencies, including the DSS, would have acted swiftly,” a civil rights advocate noted in reaction.
The circulating WASSCE result has further fueled concerns about leadership capacity and the quality of governance in Edo State, with some calling on opposition leaders and institutions to publicly denounce the incident and demand transparency.
At the time of filing this report, the governor’s media team has not officially responded to inquiries regarding the authenticity of the certificate or the recent public statements.
The developments have underscored the growing tension in Edo State’s political landscape, just months ahead of key electoral activities.
