The University of Medical Sciences, Ondo (UNIMED), has made a significant advance in environmental health research by establishing a new air quality monitoring network.
The network is designed to provide broader and more precise coverage of air pollution and related environmental factors across Ondo State and other parts of Western Nigeria.
Jenrola Akintomide, who led the installation of the equipment, said UNIMED is the first institution in Ondo State to deploy such a sophisticated system. He added that many leading Nigerian universities have yet to reach this level.
The latest phase of the project was completed on May 15, 2025, in collaboration with IQAir, USA. The first set of monitoring devices was installed in August 2024, and the team has since maintained the equipment to ensure uninterrupted operation.
According to Akintomide, the new and existing devices will work together as a unified network, improving the accuracy and reach of air quality measurements.
The system will generate real-time data, providing the public and key stakeholders with detailed information on air quality patterns in Ondo City and other urban centres in the region.
This data will support the university, health professionals, and policymakers in developing effective strategies to protect public health and reduce the harmful effects of air pollution.
