Professor Bayode Isaiah Popoola has been appointed as the first substantive Vice Chancellor of Adeyemi Federal University of Education (AFUED), Ondo.
The appointment, ratified by the university’s Governing Council, marks a significant milestone in the institution’s transition from a college of education to a full-fledged federal university.
Popoola, a Professor of Education (Guidance and Counselling) at the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, hails from Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State. He brings over 30 years of academic and administrative experience to the role.
He earned a Bachelor’s degree in English/Education from the former Ondo State University, Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University) in 1987, followed by Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Guidance and Counselling from OAU in 1995 and 2003 respectively.
At OAU, he served in various capacities, including Head of Department, Deputy Provost of the Postgraduate College, and Dean of the Faculty of Education.
Beyond the university system, Prof. Popoola has worked with both government and international organisations. He was a member of the National Examinations Council (NECO)’s School Accreditation Team from 2007 to 2009, and has consulted for UNICEF, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and the Federal Ministry of Education.
He is also a former member of the Governing Council of the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, and currently serves as an external examiner and assessor to several universities in Nigeria and abroad.
An accomplished academic, Popoola has published over 67 scholarly papers in local and international journals, presented at numerous academic conferences, and supervised more than 27 postgraduate theses.
He is a member of several professional bodies, including the Counselling Association of Nigeria, the Association of Professional Counsellors in Nigeria, the Teachers’ Registration Council of Nigeria, and the American Psychological Association.
Prof. Popoola is married to Dr. (Mrs.) Temilola Popoola, and the couple is blessed with four children.
His appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of growth and development for the institution, which only recently attained full university status
