The administration of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has issued a stern warning to students following a violent incident that erupted at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lecture Theatre. The fracas, which took place earlier this week, has been linked to rising political tensions ahead of the school’s upcoming Students’ Union elections.
In an official memo released by the Dean, Division of Student Affairs, Professor J.A. Odedire, dated June 18, 2025, the university described the incident as a “radically indecent and irritable show of shame.” The Dean confirmed that preliminary investigations have commenced and all students involved in the incident have already been identified.
“The university has noted with grave concern the trend of events and activities that have transpired within the last one week on campus,” the statement read. “Any student found to be culpable will face the full weight of our extant regulations.”
The university further reiterated its zero tolerance for hooliganism, violence, and cult-like activities, warning that any behaviour deemed inimical to the peace and safety of the university community will not be condoned. “This is a serious institution, and those who act to disrupt the academic environment will be dealt with decisively,” the Dean emphasized.
Eyewitnesses told The Nigeria Education News that the fight broke out during a heated debate between rival student groups allegedly backing different Students’ Union presidential aspirants. Chairs were reportedly thrown, and at least two students sustained minor injuries. While no arrests were confirmed, security personnel intervened quickly to disperse the crowd.
As the election season gathers momentum, the university is now increasing surveillance and internal security measures across key campus locations. “The safety of every member of the university community is non-negotiable,” said a staff member within the Dean’s office who requested anonymity.
The administration has also cautioned that it will not hesitate to deploy the full instruments of the law on any student found engaging in acts that threaten order and discipline within the institution. The statement warned students to distance themselves from activities that mirror cultism, violence, or intimidation.
With elections around the corner, the university urged students to remain civil and respectful of campus laws. “We encourage healthy political engagement, but not at the expense of safety, respect, and order,” Prof. Odedire concluded.
The Nigeria Education News remains on standby and continues to monitor developments on OAU’s campus as preparations for the Students’ Union elections intensify.
