MonITNG, a civil society organisation, has revealed that over 100 pupils at L.G.E.A. Primary School Maje in Danmahawayi Ward, Giwa LGA, Kaduna State, are forced to sit on bare floors to learn due to the complete absence of chairs and desks in the classrooms.
During a recent visit, the group discovered that some pupils bring stools or small benches from home to compensate for the lack of classroom furniture, which they take back after school each day.
“This is the harsh reality for these children who, eager to learn, endure daily discomfort and indignity,” MonITNG said in a statement. “They sit on dusty floors and lean on cracked walls, trying their best to focus despite the challenging environment.”
The organisation further highlighted the stark contrast between Kaduna State’s significant budget allocations to education in recent years and the ongoing neglect of schools like L.G.E.A. Primary School Maje.
Despite billions of naira committed to the sector, basic facilities remain absent in many public schools. MonITNG called on Governor Uba Sani to urgently provide desks, chairs, and renovate classrooms to ensure a safe and conducive learning environment.
“No child should suffer just to receive an education. These pupils deserve dignity and adequate infrastructure. The time to act is now,” the group urged.
The situation at L.G.E.A. Primary School Maje reflects a broader, systemic issue affecting public schools nationwide, with similar challenges documented in a 2014 study of public secondary schools in Ogun State.
While reforms and policy discussions continue, the current conditions at the school underscore the urgent need for tangible improvements in educational infrastructure across Nigeria.
