The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) of the Great Ife Students’ Union, Obafemi Awolowo University, has ushered in a fresh set of legislative leaders following a keenly contested in-house election held last night, just days before the institution’s larger Students’ Union general election.
The election, which took place under the observance of elected council members and student observers, was conducted peacefully in a closed legislative session, producing new officers who will steer the affairs of the SRC for the new academic year.
Hon. Awe from the Faculty of Pharmacy emerged as the Speaker of the Great Ife Students’ Union SRC. Awe secured a commanding majority, polling 123 votes against his opponent, Prince, who managed to gather only 14 votes. There were four voided ballots in the speaker race.
In the race for Deputy Speaker, Hon. Shankar from the Faculty of Education clinched victory over his challenger, Prime. Shankar polled 91 votes, while Prime received 49 votes. One vote was declared void. Shankar’s win positions him as the second in command within the legislative chamber.
The position of Clerk, another vital administrative office within the SRC, was claimed by DRH Abisoye, a student from the Faculty of Social Sciences. Abisoye polled 124 votes to defeat Deborah, who had 15 votes. Two ballots were declared void in the Clerk election.
The smooth conduct of the election has been widely commended by student stakeholders and council observers, who applauded the decorum and transparency of the electoral process. According to participants, the results reflect the collective voice of the council, chosen in earlier departmental elections.
The emergence of new leaders in the SRC is being seen as a crucial step in setting the tone for the forthcoming Students’ Union executive elections scheduled to hold on Wednesday, June 25, 2025. Many believe that a functional and credible SRC leadership is key to ensuring accountability within the broader union structure.
Several students on campus who spoke with The Nigeria Education News expressed optimism about the new leadership, particularly praising Hon. Awe’s experience and calm demeanor. They urged the new executives to prioritize students’ welfare and take a firm stance on academic policies, transportation, hostel welfare, and union transparency.
