The Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) has faulted the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) over delayed resolution of an admission dispute involving one of its graduates, Jamiu Basola. Basola recently discovered that JAMB had flagged his admission as fake, seven years after he was admitted and successfully completed his degree. While Basola raised concerns about JAMB’s action on social media, FUTA has since clarified its position and urged the board to expedite resolution of the matter.
Basola was admitted into the Department of Civil Engineering at FUTA for the 2017/2018 academic session after passing the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by JAMB. He completed the five-year programme, graduating with a Second Class Upper Division.
The controversy emerged when Basola attempted to fill his mobilization form for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) during his final year, only to be informed that JAMB had declared his admission invalid. Upon contacting the board, Basola was advised that the matter would require a police investigation.
Following this development, the police invited FUTA to submit all documents related to Basola’s admission for verification. After thorough scrutiny, the police submitted their report to JAMB headquarters for further action. FUTA also sent a formal reminder to JAMB, urging the board to address the issue promptly.
In a statement released on Sunday and signed by JAMB’s Public Communication Adviser, Fabian Benjamin, the board denied approving Basola’s admission. JAMB stated that Basola’s records were not found in its Central Admissions Processing System, contradicting the documentation submitted by FUTA.
FUTA, through a statement signed by its Director of Communications, Adegbenro Adebanjo, and shared on the university’s official Facebook page, reiterated that it has fulfilled all responsibilities regarding Basola’s admission and is awaiting JAMB’s resolution. “The ball is now in the court of JAMB,” the statement read.
Basola expressed shock at the development, insisting he possesses all necessary admission documents and successfully completed his studies.
In solidarity, the Council of Past FUTASU Leaders is set to hold a press conference today, July 1, to support Basola and call for swift intervention from JAMB.
