The Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Ilorin, held its Annual Distinguished Personality Lecture on Monday, June 30, 2025, at the University Auditorium, with an intellectually engaging session that addressed a pressing national issue, livestock development in Nigeria.
Themed “The Political Economy of Livestock Development in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects,” the lecture was delivered by Professor Attahiru Jega, former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and currently the Special Adviser to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Coordinator of the Presidential Livestock Reform.
The event attracted top academics, policymakers, students, and development stakeholders from across Nigeria, providing a platform for robust dialogue on the challenges, opportunities, and policy directions related to livestock production, agricultural economy, and national development.
In his keynote address, Professor Jega provided an insightful analysis of Nigeria’s livestock sector, exploring its economic significance, systemic weaknesses, and the potential impact of sustainable reforms. He stressed the need for coordinated policy action, investment in infrastructure, and effective stakeholder engagement to transform the livestock industry. He also praised the Faculty for choosing a timely and relevant theme that aligns with ongoing national reform efforts.
This year’s lecture honoured Senator Saliu Mustapha, Senator representing Kwara Central Senatorial District and Chairman of the Senate Committee on Agriculture and Production Services. In recognition of his legislative impact and contributions to agricultural development, Senator Mustapha was celebrated as the Faculty’s 2025 Distinguished Honouree.
In his goodwill message, Professor Jega commended Senator Mustapha for his notable service and constituency-focused representation. “Senator Saliu Mustapha stands out among his peers. He is one of the most effective senators, representing his people with dedication and vision,” Professor Jega stated.
In a remarkable gesture of support to the university, Senator Mustapha pledged a donation of N10 million, the construction of a fully-equipped lecture theatre, and the establishment of a modern ICT centre for the Faculty of Social Sciences. The donation is aimed at enhancing academic infrastructure, promoting digital learning, and strengthening research capacity within the faculty.
The event was part of the Faculty’s ongoing tradition of recognising excellence and fostering academic discourse around national issues. The 2025 edition reaffirmed the University of Ilorin’s commitment to bridging academia and policy, providing students and scholars alike with access to thought leadership and practical solutions to national challenges.
The Annual Distinguished Personality Lecture continues to be one of the highlights of academic engagement within the Faculty of Social Sciences, showcasing the university’s motto, Better By Far, in action.
