Academic and administrative activities at Lagos State University (LASU) have been grounded following the commencement of an indefinite strike by the institution’s staff unions.
The strike, which took effect on Thursday, July 31, comes just days ahead of the university’s second semester examinations for the 2024/2025 academic session, scheduled to begin on Monday, August 4.
In a letter dated July 31 and addressed to the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, the Joint Action Committee (JAC) of the staff unions announced the decision to embark on industrial action over unresolved issues with the university management.
The JAC comprises the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU-LASU), Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU-LASU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU-LASU), and National Association of Academic Technologists (NAAT-LASU).
The letter was jointly signed by ASUU-LASU Chairman, Dr. Ibrahim A. Bakare, and Secretary, Dr. Sylvester O. Idowu; SSANU-LASU Chairman, Mr. Oluwaseyi Lawal, and Secretary, Mr. Waheed Majekodunmi.
The unions stated that the strike action followed a resolution reached at an emergency congress of the Joint Action Committee, where members unanimously agreed to down tools over lingering grievances.
“Sequel to the decision reached at the Emergency Congress of the Joint Action Committee of LASU Staff Unions, we write to notify you that an indefinite strike has commenced at Lagos State University effective July 31, 2025,” the statement read in part.
All union members across LASU’s main campus in Ojo, the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) in Ikeja, and the Epe campus have been directed to withdraw their services and vacate their duty posts with immediate effect.
The unions vowed that the strike would continue until all their demands are fully addressed by the appropriate authorities.
