Why Nigerian Students Excel Abroad Despite Academic Struggles at Home

The performance of Nigerian students abroad continues to raise questions and spark debates among scholars, policymakers, and education stakeholders. While students from Nigeria often rank among the top-performing international scholars in institutions across Europe and North America, many still enter these systems with certain foundational academic weaknesses. This paradox raises crucial questions about the quality, style, and culture of education in Nigeria, and how a shift in the academic environment transforms students’ outcomes.

Findings by The Nigeria Education News reveal that the success of Nigerian students abroad is not always due to the strength of the Nigerian educational system but often despite it. Interviews conducted with international faculty and student support officers in several institutions across the United States and the United Kingdom indicate that most Nigerian students begin their international education journey facing major academic adaptation hurdles.

A retired academic officer at a large U.S. university who worked for 30 years and currently volunteers with an international student support group explained that Nigerian students typically enter the system with strong memorization skills but lack the analytical and critical thinking capabilities expected in Western educational systems. According to him, “Nigerian students often struggle at first. They know how to memorize, but they are unfamiliar with applying that knowledge, synthesizing information, or engaging in deep analysis.”

This foundational gap has been linked directly to the structure of the Nigerian curriculum, which prioritizes rote learning and examination-based assessments. In Nigeria, passing exams often revolves around memorizing textbook definitions, model answers, and notes dictated by teachers, with limited emphasis on independent thought or academic exploration. Consequently, students find themselves unprepared for systems abroad where creativity, originality, and critical engagement with content are emphasized.

Another recurring challenge reported by faculty members and international support staff abroad is the issue of academic integrity. In Nigeria, due to decades of institutional decay and inconsistent academic policies, plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty are not only common but often normalized. A senior lecturer at a Canadian university explained, “It is always difficult for Nigerian students to grasp why copying someone else’s work without attribution is unacceptable. They usually come from systems where even lecturers hand out plagiarized materials or recycled content.”

This lack of early exposure to the concept of academic ethics often leads Nigerian students into early confrontations with disciplinary procedures when they begin studies abroad. However, those who receive proper orientation and support tend to adjust quickly and eventually excel. “Once Nigerian students grasp what is expected, they are among the most dedicated and high-achieving students I have worked with,” the volunteer noted.

One Nigerian student studying at a university in the United Kingdom shared her journey with The Nigeria Education News. She said, “It was hard at first. I almost failed my first semester because I didn’t know what referencing was. But once I learned the rules and changed how I studied, I started to enjoy learning in a way I never did in Nigeria.” Her story is not uncommon.

The difference, many experts argue, lies in the learning environment. Abroad, students have access to modern resources, stable academic calendars, mentorship, and support services that help them thrive. In Nigeria, incessant strikes, poorly equipped laboratories, inadequate libraries, and large class sizes weaken the learning experience and diminish academic motivation.

Even at the policy level, Nigeria’s education system lacks cohesion and innovation. Curriculum reviews are infrequent, teacher training is inconsistent, and corruption has compromised the integrity of examinations. With federal universities frequently shut down due to industrial action, and public schools underfunded, many students simply pass through the system without ever being adequately challenged or prepared.

Furthermore, educational values differ. While Western systems promote questioning, argumentation, and independent research, Nigerian schools often discourage students from challenging authority or thinking outside the box. Teachers are rarely questioned, and students who attempt to do so may be labelled as rude or rebellious.

Yet, the resilience and adaptability of Nigerian students remain evident. Once exposed to a supportive learning environment that values innovation and intellectual freedom, many students quickly adapt and shine. It is not unusual for Nigerian students to graduate with first-class degrees or distinctions in foreign universities, sometimes even outperforming local students.

This dual reality reveals two things: Nigerian students are capable of greatness, and the Nigerian system is failing them. Their academic excellence abroad is a testament to their potential, not the strength of the institutions that shaped their foundational education.

The Nigeria Education News concludes that to replicate such success locally, Nigeria must restructure its educational philosophy. The system must move beyond rigid memorization and invest in creativity, analytical reasoning, teacher quality, and academic integrity. Nigeria must also rebuild its public institutions to offer students a reliable, well-resourced, and intellectually stimulating environment.

Until then, the irony will persist: Nigeria’s brightest students will continue to struggle at home but thrive abroad, succeeding not because of their system, but in spite of it.
