In a significant move to reform the nation’s education system, the Honorable Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, CON, has officially inaugurated the Government-Private Sector Working Group (GPSWG).
This new body is a key component of the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative (NESRI), a comprehensive effort to tackle the high rate of learning poverty among Nigerian youth.
The primary objective of the GPSWG is to leverage the expertise of the private sector alongside government leadership to address learning deficiencies affecting millions of children aged 5 to 14.
The initiative aims to improve the quality of education, enhance access, foster innovation, and equip Nigerian youth with the skills necessary to compete in a globalized economy.
During the inauguration, Dr. Alausa underscored the importance of this collaboration, stating, “Together, we will move from a resource-based to a knowledge-based economy.”
The GPSWG’s mandate is to:
– Align with national educational priorities.
– Engage in transformative reforms.
– Build equitable and innovative systems.
– Create a robust platform for private sector input.
– Provide actionable recommendations for the future of education.
The working group consists of 17 members, with nine representatives from government agencies, including Dr. Alausa and Professor Suwaiba Sai’d Ahmad, and eight from the private sector.
