The University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has taken a bold step towards deepening its internationalisation agenda by engaging with Universiti Malaya, Malaysia, one of Asia’s leading institutions, to explore new opportunities for collaboration. The high-level meeting, which took place on Wednesday, August 20, 2025, marks another strategic move by the university to strengthen global ties and promote academic excellence.
Leading the UNILORIN delegation was the Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the Governing Council, His Excellency, Surveyor Abiodun Aluko, FCIML. He was accompanied by key officials including the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Research, Technology, and Innovation, Professor Muhtar Etudaiye, a Governing Council member, Alhaja Abosede Juwon Olayiwola, and the University Librarian, Professor Kamal Tunde Omopupa.
The visit, facilitated under UNILORIN’s global engagement drive, aimed at identifying mutually beneficial partnerships that could expand the frontiers of research, staff training, student opportunities, and knowledge exchange across both institutions.
At Universiti Malaya, the delegation received a warm welcome from Professor Dr. Yvonne Lim Ai Lian, Associate Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & International). She chaired the session and steered conversations toward concrete areas where the two institutions could collaborate.
According to the discussions, priority areas for cooperation include student mobility programs, which would allow undergraduates and postgraduates from both universities to study abroad, experience diverse academic environments, and gain global exposure that would enhance employability and research skills.
Another focus was staff exchange initiatives, which would see academics and administrative staff move across the two institutions for teaching, training, and capacity-building purposes. Such collaborations are expected to raise the quality of instruction, research output, and institutional management practices.
The universities also considered joint research and publications as an avenue to tackle pressing global challenges, leveraging shared expertise in diverse fields such as science, technology, health, and the humanities. This would not only improve international visibility but also attract global research funding.
Furthermore, both institutions expressed interest in co-hosting academic conferences and workshops that would bring together scholars, students, and policymakers from around the world. Such events would provide platforms for critical discourse, innovation sharing, and networking.
Speaking on behalf of UNILORIN, Vice-Chancellor Professor Wahab Egbewole, SAN, emphasized the university’s readiness to engage with international partners in ways that would advance Nigeria’s educational landscape. He noted that collaboration with Universiti Malaya aligns with UNILORIN’s mission of being a global player in research and learning.
Pro-Chancellor Abiodun Aluko, FCIML, also stressed that the Governing Council is committed to supporting initiatives that will enhance the university’s standing in global rankings. He described the visit as a “gateway to impactful knowledge exchange” that would reposition UNILORIN in the global academic community.
The host institution equally expressed optimism, with Professor Dr. Yvonne Lim Ai Lian affirming Universiti Malaya’s willingness to work with UNILORIN on projects that will benefit students, staff, and society at large. She underscored the importance of South-South collaborations in advancing higher education and solving common developmental challenges.
The meeting ended on a positive note, with both universities agreeing to set up working committees to draft a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) that will outline the specifics of the partnership. The agreement is expected to cover timelines, responsibilities, and measurable outcomes for the identified areas of collaboration.
With this strategic engagement, UNILORIN has once again reaffirmed its #BetterByFar commitment to quality education, global competitiveness, and sustainable academic innovation.
