The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and the chairmen of State Universal Basic Education Boards (SUBEBs) from the 36 states and the FCT have convened in Lagos for their 27th quarterly meeting to address critical gaps between educational planning and classroom performance.
The meeting, themed “Bridging the Gap between Planning and Performance towards Achieving Quality Basic Education,” aims to devise actionable strategies for strengthening the Universal Basic Education (UBE) programme nationwide.
In his keynote address, Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, represented by his deputy Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, emphasized the state’s commitment to education and urged stakeholders to develop sustainable methods to increase school enrollment. He also called on teachers to embrace continuous professional development to adapt to the evolving learning landscape.
The Executive Secretary of UBEC, Aisha Garba, stated that the commission’s efforts are aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda. She commended Lagos State for serving as a model in policy implementation, teacher welfare, and educational innovation.
“Quality basic education must go beyond policies and blueprints; it must translate into real impact in every community, every classroom, and for every child across Nigeria,” Garba remarked.
She reaffirmed the collective resolve of the educational leaders to:
Ensure efficient and transparent use of the 2024 matching grant funds.
Strengthen monitoring mechanisms at the school level.
Enhance collaboration with communities, parents, and governments to make universal basic education a reality for all.
The quarterly meeting serves as a crucial platform for education leaders to share achievements, discuss challenges, and collaborate on strategies to ensure no child is left behind in the pursuit of quality basic education.
