The Ondo State Government has approved the transfer of the University of Medical Sciences Teaching Hospital complex in Akure to the Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA) for use as its newly established College of Medicine and Teaching Hospital.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka, disclosed this while briefing reporters on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting in Akure.
Ajaka said the decision followed President Bola Tinubu’s approval for FUTA to establish a College of Medicine and a teaching hospital.
According to him, the Akure medical complex will now be handed over to the Federal Government to serve as FUTA’s primary medical training facility.
“The handover includes the transfer of infrastructure, medical equipment, staff and liabilities. All personnel will be absorbed into the FUTA Teaching Hospital under the Federal Government,” Ajaka said.
He described the move as a strategic intervention aimed at strengthening healthcare delivery in the state while advancing FUTA’s ambition to become a centre of excellence in medical education and research.
It will be recalled that President Tinubu, on November 6, 2024, approved the establishment of a teaching hospital in Akure for FUTA and directed that necessary modalities be put in place for its implementation.
