Governor’s College has emerged winner of the 10th edition of the National Quiz Competition on Legislature and Democracy, organized by the National Institute for Legislative and Democratic Studies (NILDS) under the supervision of the National Assembly.
The competition, held on Friday, September 26, 2025, at the Kano State Library Board, featured six secondary schools drawn from the three senatorial zones of the state. Governor’s College clinched the first position, earning the right to represent Kano State at the forthcoming North West regional competition.
Other participating schools included Government Girls Secondary School Kadawa, Science College Dawakin Tofa, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo, Girls Science and Technical College Sumaila, and Government Secondary School Rano.
The quiz tested students’ knowledge on themes such as legislative oversight and accountability, parliamentary procedures, the structure and performance of the National Assembly, as well as constitutional governance.
Declaring the event open, Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Hon. Suleiman Mukhtar Ishaq Madobi, represented by Assistant Chief Legislative Officer Umar Abdulganiyu, reaffirmed the Assembly’s support for initiatives that deepen civic and legislative knowledge among young Nigerians. He noted that winning schools would be invited to the House for further encouragement ahead of the national competition.
Kano State Commissioner for Education, Dr. Ali Haruna Makoda, represented by the Director of Educational Support Services, Hajiya Halima Sadiya Tukur, described the event as more than a competition. “It is a gathering that celebrates knowledge, inspires young minds, and lays a solid foundation for participatory citizenship,” he said.
Executive Secretary of the Kano State Library Board, Dr. Kabiru Ado Zakirai, commended the partnership between the National Assembly and NILDS for bringing the competition to Kano.
Announcing the results, NILDS Director-General, Professor Abubakar O. Suleiman, represented by Programme State Coordinator Aliyu Abdullahi, confirmed Governor’s College as the winner, Government Girls Secondary School Gwarzo as runner-up, and Government Secondary School Rano in third place.
Prof. Suleiman recalled that the competition began in 2016 with schools from the Federal Capital Territory, before expanding nationwide on the directive of the Institute’s Governing Council. He noted that this year’s edition marks the fourth time the contest is being held at the national level.
Certificates of attendance were presented to all participants, while prizes were awarded to the winners by the Institute.
