The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, has reacted to reports of a Federal High Court ruling in Enugu that ordered the suspension of the 2025/2026 admission processes at the institution and the University of Lagos (UNILAG).
Justice A.T. Segun-Bello, on September 30, 2025, restrained both universities and the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) from releasing or approving admission lists following a suit filed by five aggrieved Post-UTME candidates. The case has been adjourned to October 28, 2025, for hearing.
The applicants, Chibuzor Success, Oyeleye Zainab Ayomide, Adedeji John Samuel, Monsura Aliat Aduragbemi, and Bassey Daniel Nsikak had alleged irregularities in the Post-UTME process and sought the court’s intervention to halt admissions until the matter was resolved.
Reacting to the development, OAU’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Abiodun Olanrewaju, clarified that the university had not been officially served with any court notice regarding the matter. He dismissed speculations circulating online, stressing that OAU does not issue statements based on unverified social media trends.
“In any case, and quite frankly, our university does not react to trends on social media regarding court rulings or judgments,” Mr. Olanrewaju said. “If and when we are properly served by the plaintiff(s), we will react accordingly and appropriately. The general public will know our stance.”
He emphasized that, as of the time of speaking, the institution remained unaware of any official court process. “Officially, as it stands now, the university is not aware of any court case,” he reiterated.
The university spokesperson assured that OAU remains committed to upholding due process in its admission exercise. He added that the institution has always maintained transparency and fairness in compliance with JAMB’s regulations and Nigeria’s educational policies.
Education observers note that the case has generated nationwide interest, as it raises questions about the integrity of Post-UTME examinations in Nigerian universities. OAU’s cautious response is seen as an attempt to avoid prejudicing the ongoing legal proceedings.
Stakeholders, however, have called on all parties to remain calm and allow the judicial process to take its course. They also urged universities and JAMB to strengthen transparency in admission processes to prevent a recurrence of disputes.
The outcome of the case, scheduled for October 28, will determine whether the suspension of admissions at OAU and UNILAG will continue or be lifted, paving the way for the release of admission lists for the 2025/2026 academic session.
For now, OAU’s management maintains that it will not be swayed by unconfirmed reports until the university is formally engaged in the legal process.
