However, the University of Lagos, through an announcement on its official website, stated that it was ranked first in Nigeria in the same ranking band alongside University of Ibadan.
A fact-check of the 2026 THE World University Rankings, released on October 9, 2025, shows that both universities share the 801–1000 global ranking band, which places them jointly as the highest-ranked universities in Nigeria.
According to the published results, over 2,191 institutions were assessed globally. The ranking places Covenant University and Bayero University, Kano in the next category, the 1001–1200 band.
In the same global category (801–1000), several other universities appear, including University of Cape Coast (Ghana), Alexandria University (Egypt), Cairo University (Egypt), Ain Shams University (Egypt), and Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (Mexico).

In response to an inquiry, Times Higher Education media representative Caroline confirmed via email that:
“In answer to your question, University of Ibadan and University of Lagos are in joint position 1st in Nigeria.”
