The management of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) has denied reports claiming that it has increased school fees for the 2025/2026 academic session, describing the speculation as a misconception.
In a statement issued yesterday by the Head of the Communication Unit, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university explained that the adjustments appearing on students’ payment portals were not the result of a fee hike but a consolidation of existing charges, in line with a directive from the Federal Ministry of Education.
According to the statement, the restructuring was carried out to unify all approved dues that were previously paid separately at the faculty and departmental levels but not reflected on the students’ central payment portal.
“The attention of the University of Lagos has been drawn to reports and online discussions suggesting that the institution has increased fees for the 2025/2026 academic session. The University wishes to reassure students, parents and the general public that there has been no fee hike,” the statement read.
UNILAG said the change followed a directive from the Federal Government instructing all universities with students benefiting from the Nigeria Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) to integrate their payable fees into a single structure.
The university explained that the move would promote transparency and allow NELFUND to properly capture and process all payments due to students under the loan scheme.
“This system ensures that once a student makes payment through the official portal, no further payments will be demanded at the faculty or departmental levels,” the statement added.
UNILAG also clarified that differences in the amounts reflected across programmes were due to varying academic requirements and did not amount to a fee increase.
The institution expressed appreciation to students, parents and other stakeholders for their understanding and continued support, reaffirming its commitment to accountability and the pursuit of academic excellence.
