The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences, Iyin Ekiti (FUTESI), Professor Gbenga Aribisala, has appealed to the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) for a two-week extension to allow the new institution complete its 2025 admission process.
Professor Aribisala made this appeal during an interaction with journalists at the university campus in Iyin Ekiti on Friday, where he disclosed that the university had so far processed the admission of 1,200 candidates out of its approved 1,500 quota.
He explained that the institution was still receiving a large influx of qualified candidates who were eager to gain admission, noting that the time constraint had put the management under considerable pressure.
The VC expressed concern over JAMB’s decision to close the admission portal for all public institutions by midnight on Friday, November 31, 2025, which would effectively halt the admission process for thousands of prospective students.
According to him, “We are under some tension because after closing the portal by midnight today, there are still thousands of candidates who are interested. Many have been hanging around since morning because they are desperate to secure admission. I am pleading with JAMB to consider our situation as a new university and grant us an additional two weeks in November to complete the process.”
Professor Aribisala further explained that FUTESI had only recently been enlisted on the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), hence the need for additional time to stabilise its admission process. He expressed optimism that with a brief extension, the university could admit more qualified students to reach its full quota.
He stated, “We have a quota of 1,500 candidates, and we have successfully processed 1,200. If we can get just two more weeks, we can conveniently complete the process and give more deserving students a chance to begin their academic journey with us.”
The Vice Chancellor also revealed that preparations for the commencement of academic activities were in advanced stages, noting that the university’s physical and administrative structures were nearing completion.
He said, “Academic activities will hopefully begin in December because our facilities are almost ready. We are making sure that all necessary infrastructure and logistics are in place before admitting the pioneer students.”
Professor Aribisala equally disclosed that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had graciously approved staff recruitment for the new university. According to him, both teaching and non-teaching positions would soon be advertised, with the recruitment process expected to last for about six weeks.
He added, “After the advertisement and recruitment exercise, the university will have the full complement of staff, which will allow us to begin operations in earnest.”
It would be recalled that JAMB had earlier directed all Nigerian public universities to finalise their 2025 admission exercises by October 31, 2025, while private universities were given until November 30, 2025. The decision, according to JAMB, was aimed at stabilising the academic calendar and ensuring equitable access to admission across all tertiary institutions.
President Bola Tinubu had in February 2025 signed the bills establishing FUTESI in Iyin Ekiti and the Federal University of Agriculture and Development Studies in Iragbiji, Osun State. According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, the new institutions are expected to drive innovation, research, and economic growth by producing highly skilled graduates in science, technology, and agriculture.
