In his inaugural semester, Joseph encountered an unexpected obstacle during the SSC 101 examination, a multiple‑choice test administered via optical mark recognition (OMR) sheets.
The examination paper stated that 80 questions were to be answered, whereas the actual test contained only 79 items; Joseph, absorbed in solving each item, continued to mark responses beyond the correct terminal question.
Unaware of the discrepancy, he completed 80 answers while his peers halted at the 79th question, thereby violating the examination protocol.
Upon realizing the mistake after leaving the examination hall, Joseph attempted urgently to return to the venue and later appealed to the department head, but institutional regulations prohibited any post‑exam alterations.
Consequently, the results sheet reflected a failing grade (F) for SSC 101, reducing his first‑semester cumulative grade point average (CGPA) from a projected 5.0 to 4.17.
The sudden drop in academic standing caused Joseph considerable emotional distress, prompting tears and a sense of helplessness that threatened to undermine his confidence.
Rather than succumbing to defeat, Joseph resolved to transform the setback into a catalyst for heightened discipline, vowing to earn no grade lower than B in subsequent courses and to sustain a minimum CGPA of 4.5 thereafter.
He adhered strictly to this self‑imposed standard while simultaneously balancing rigorous coursework with income‑generating activities to support himself financially.
Through relentless effort across successive semesters, Joseph progressively elevated his academic performance, ultimately attaining a final CGPA of 4.62 and securing a First Class honours degree.
He attributes his triumphant outcome to divine grace and personal perseverance, emphasizing that a single failure need not define a student’s ultimate trajectory.
