A Computer Engineering scholar at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Segun Aina, has made history with his appointment as Professor of Computer Engineering at the age of 39, promising a renewed sense of responsibility and commitment to academia, industry, and national development.
Aina’s elevation places him among the youngest professors in his field in Nigeria and reflects his remarkable trajectory in both teaching and research. He currently lectures in the Department of Computer Engineering at OAU, where he holds several key departmental and faculty positions.
Reacting to the appointment, Aina described the milestone as humbling and stated that it brings with it greater expectations. “This milestone is a humbling reminder that excellence, discipline, and purpose-driven work can accelerate impact. I see this professorship not as a destination, but as a renewed responsibility to contribute more meaningfully to academia, industry, and national development,” he said.
The promotion was based on Aina’s strong research credentials, academic leadership, and his commitment to linking theoretical knowledge with practical applications within Nigeria’s education and technology ecosystem. Colleagues highlighted his ability to translate complex academic concepts into tangible solutions as a distinguishing factor in his career.
Aina earned his Bachelor of Engineering in Computer Systems Engineering from the University of Kent, United Kingdom, in 2008, followed by a Master’s degree in Internet Computing and Network Security from Loughborough University in 2009. He later obtained a PhD in Digital Signal Processing from the same institution, equipping him with a solid foundation in advanced computing and engineering principles.
Beyond teaching and research, Aina has cultivated a reputation as a pragmatic academic and entrepreneur. In 2010, he co-founded Fluid Click Solutions Ltd, an IT services and engineering project management company. His professional interests span education technology, agriculture, hospitality, capacity building, and technical and vocational education.
Aina emphasizes the importance of ensuring that academic knowledge is applied to real-world problems. “My lifelong commitment has been to ensure that academic knowledge does not exist in isolation, but actively solves real problems. I remain passionate about mentoring the next generation of engineers, innovators, and entrepreneurs who will shape Africa’s future,” he said.
He has also undertaken consultancy assignments for various public and private sector organizations, including the Job Creation Unit in the Office of the Vice President, several state governments, and national examination bodies. His leadership skills have been strengthened through executive education at Lagos Business School, Pan-Atlantic University.
Aina’s governance experience includes serving on the pioneer Governing Council of Bamidele Olumilua University of Education, Science and Technology, Ikere, Ekiti, and as Chairman of the Advisory Board of Queensland Academy, Isolo, Lagos. He is a COREN-registered engineer and an active member of professional bodies including the Nigerian Computer Society, Nigerian Society of Engineers, the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Institution of Engineering and Technology.
In addition to his academic and professional achievements, Aina is deeply involved in community development and philanthropy. He serves as National Financial Secretary of the Otan Ayegbaju Progressive Union and convenes the DSA Initiative for the Support of Education and Entrepreneurship, promoting access to quality education and youth enterprise development across Nigeria.
This historic appointment not only cements Aina’s place among Nigeria’s top academics but also signals a commitment to leveraging engineering expertise for national development, innovation, and mentorship for future generations of African engineers.
