Anambra State Governor, Professor Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has emphasised that education remains the top priority of his administration. During a New Year outreach programme where newborns were presented with gifts and cash, the governor highlighted the critical need to revitalise public schools across the state.
Governor Soludo explained that improving public education involves strengthening infrastructure, providing essential learning resources, and supporting both students and teachers. He described these measures as central to ensuring that all children have equitable access to quality education, regardless of their socio-economic background.
“Education remains a top priority. Our vision is to revitalise public schools across the state, building on the enduring legacy of institutions such as Uga Boys Secondary School,” he said, noting that schools must provide both academic excellence and opportunities for personal development.
He stressed that modern classrooms, functional laboratories, well-stocked libraries, and reliable power and water supply are necessary to create a learning environment that prepares students to compete nationally and globally. Governor Soludo also highlighted the importance of safety and comfort in encouraging student engagement and academic focus.
Teacher support and professional development were also key points of the governor’s message. He explained that motivated and well-trained educators directly influence student outcomes, and that the state is committed to enhancing teacher skills, welfare, and recognition to raise educational standards.
The Principal of Uga Boys Secondary School, Mr Benjamin Igwema, praised the governor for his transformative interventions, noting that reconstruction and renovation work has significantly improved classrooms, laboratories, and other facilities. These changes, he said, have enhanced the school’s learning environment and boosted student morale.
Igwema further commended Governor Soludo’s free education policy and the sponsorship of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) fees. He explained that these initiatives have reduced the financial burden on families and allowed more students to remain in school and complete their education.
According to the principal, the combination of improved infrastructure, student welfare initiatives, and teacher support has led to higher enrolment and greater engagement in learning. Students now have access to resources and facilities that allow them to focus on academics while developing critical thinking and other skills.
Governor Soludo reiterated that his administration would continue to monitor and support public schools through consistent funding, strategic planning, and oversight. He emphasised that sustainable interventions are necessary to ensure that progress in education is maintained and scaled across the state.
Education stakeholders have welcomed the governor’s renewed focus on public schools, praising the combination of infrastructure upgrades, free education policies, and exam sponsorships. Many believe that with continued commitment, Anambra’s public schools can serve as models of quality education in Nigeria, producing students capable of excelling academically and contributing meaningfully to society.
