The Federal University of Lafia (FULafia) has achieved a significant milestone, securing the 36th position among Nigerian universities in the newly released Times Higher Education (THE) 2026 Rankings.
The achievement marks a period of steady growth for the young institution, which now ranks higher than several older peers and established state-owned universities in the North-Central region. Notably, FULafia’s 36th-place finish puts it 10 spots ahead of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), which is ranked 46th on the same list.
The recognition is being hailed as a validation of the vision and leadership of the University’s outgoing Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Shehu Abdul Rahman. Since its modest beginnings, FULafia has consistently worked to carve out a space within Nigeria’s competitive higher education landscape through a commitment to quality teaching and impactful research.
Speaking on the latest ranking, Prof. Abdul Rahman noted that the achievement serves as a vital source of reassurance for all stakeholders.
“For students, this ranking affirms that the hours spent in lecture halls, laboratories, and libraries are backed by an institution gaining national recognition,” the Vice-Chancellor stated. “For parents, it strengthens confidence in FULafia as a place where academic dreams can be nurtured, while for staff, it is a powerful validation of the effort required to build a university that stands tall.”
Beyond the campus gates, the ranking carries significant weight for the host community of Lafia and the wider Nasarawa State. FULafia’s rise reinforces the role of public universities as engines of progress and socio-economic transformation.
While university rankings are not the sole measure of success, they tell a compelling story of development, resilience, and ambition. Ranking 36th in the country indicates that FULafia is moving in the right direction, with the institution now aiming for even higher benchmarks.
As the university community celebrates this milestone, the focus remains on continuous improvement, ensuring that this recognition serves as a stepping stone toward an even brighter future.
