The Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) community is in mourning following the sudden death of Timilehin Toromade, an 18-year-old Part Three medical student. According to reports, Toromade died in his sleep in the early hours of Tuesday, January 6, 2026.
The university’s management expressed profound shock and sorrow over the incident, describing it as “deeply painful and distressing”. In a statement, Vice-Chancellor Prof. Simeon Bamire condoled with the family, classmates, and friends of the deceased, stating that “the entire University community is united in grief over the untimely departure of a student who had embraced the rigours of medical training with the hope of, one day, healing others and serving humanity”.
Toromade, with matriculation number CLI/2022/133, was reportedly found dead in his room at Fajuyi Hall, with no signs of struggle or foul play. The university is working closely with relevant authorities to understand the circumstances surrounding his death and has put in place support measures for affected students and staff.
“The loss of a young life filled with promise, purpose, and potential is a tragedy that words alone cannot adequately capture,” Prof. Bamire said. The university has urged students, staff, and friends to remain calm, compassionate, and prayerful during this period of mourning.
This incident has sparked concerns about mental health support systems on campus, echoing a similar incident in August 2025 when a medical student, Ajibola Ibitayo, took his own life after failing exams. The university has emphasized the importance of seeking help and support when facing academic or personal challenges.
