The National Examinations Council (NECO) has issued an urgent directive to school principals and proprietors across Nigeria to update their schools’ information on the Council’s official database, in line with ongoing reforms by the Federal Ministry of Education.
The directive, contained in an official notice addressed to school administrators, emphasised that the update is critical to ensuring that NECO fully aligns its operations with the Federal Government’s education reform programme.
According to the Council, the database update exercise is aimed at improving accuracy, transparency, and efficiency in the administration of its examinations and related services. School administrators were reminded that up-to-date institutional data is essential for effective planning and coordination.
“To expedite this process, the Council has provided an online platform for immediate action,” the notice stated, urging education stakeholders to treat the exercise with utmost urgency.
NECO specifically directed principals and proprietors to ensure that all required school information is completed and submitted through its official portal. The Council warned that delays or failure to comply could disrupt examination processes and other institutional engagements.
“All schools are expected to complete and submit their information on or before Wednesday, 21st January, 2026,” the Council stressed, underscoring the non-negotiable nature of the deadline.
The Council further advised school heads to promptly circulate the update link to relevant school authorities to avoid last-minute challenges and system congestion as the deadline approaches.
Education stakeholders have described the directive as part of broader efforts to strengthen regulatory oversight and digital governance in Nigeria’s examination system. An education administrator noted that “a reliable database is the backbone of credible examinations and institutional accountability.”
NECO also assured schools of its readiness to provide clarification where necessary, encouraging administrators experiencing difficulties to reach out through official communication channels.
The Council expressed appreciation for the cooperation of school administrators nationwide, stating that collective compliance would enhance the effectiveness of ongoing reforms in the education sector.
