The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has launched a Smart Identity Card platform as part of its digital transformation programme, introducing a unified system designed to improve identification, access control, and institutional data management.
The initiative was unveiled on Friday, February 27, 2026, at the Senate Chamber of the University’s Senate House during a ceremony attended by principal officers, staff, students, and partners. The project is being implemented in partnership with Heckerbella Limited and Lotus Bank.
Speaking at the event, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Folasade T. Ogunsola, said the Smart ID Card represents a key component of the University’s digital integration agenda. She noted that the platform is intended to harmonise academic, administrative, and security systems into a single, coordinated framework.
According to her, beyond serving as a means of identification, the card enables secure authentication and supports improved operational efficiency across the institution. She added that the initiative aligns with the University’s commitment to building a technology-driven and data-informed learning environment.
The Managing Director of Heckerbella Limited, Ms. Yemi Keri, explained that the company provided the technological infrastructure for the project, including data capture, verification, and systems integration. She stated that regulatory and data protection standards were observed throughout the implementation process.
Also speaking, the Managing Director of Lotus Bank, Dr. Isiaka Ajani Lawal, said the bank’s involvement forms part of its corporate social responsibility in the education sector. He disclosed that the card includes optional banking functionality, allowing users who choose to activate the feature to access financial services digitally.
A demonstration of the Smart ID Card was conducted during the ceremony, with the Vice-Chancellor and selected students activating their cards.
The University stated that the new system is expected to strengthen security, streamline administrative processes, and enhance service delivery across the campus.
