The University of Lagos has hosted the Second Student Induction Ceremony of the Nigerian Psychological Association (NPA), Lagos State Chapter, formally admitting a new cohort of students into the Students Membership category of the Association.
The ceremony was held on February 27, 2026, at the Faculty of Social Sciences Lecture Hall, UNILAG, Akoka, as part of activities marking the Association’s 3rd Biennial Scientific Conference themed Psychology and Artificial Intelligence in Digital Minds.
The event brought together scholars, practitioners, and students to explore the evolving intersection between psychology and emerging technologies. Delivering a goodwill message on behalf of the Vice Chancellor, Professor Folasade Ogunsola, the Acting Director of NITDA Information Technology Hub at UNILAG, Dr Victor Odumuyiwa, said the conference theme reflects the growing influence of artificial intelligence on human behaviour, cognition, and mental health.
He emphasised the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration between psychology and technology and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to promoting innovation, critical thinking, and research that addresses contemporary societal needs.
Odumuyiwa also encouraged the newly inducted students to uphold professionalism, integrity, and continuous learning in an increasingly digital environment.
The induction featured contributions from Barrister David Diya Ashaolu, Founder and Project Director of Velma Action to Reduce Cybercrime; Dr Leonard Okonkwo, a chartered psychologist and addiction specialist; and Professor Samuel Oladipo of Tai Solarin University of Education.
In their remarks, Dr Sylvester Atiri, Chairperson of the NPA Lagos State Chapter, and Dr Oluwakemi Akintoyese, Chairman of the Local Organising Committee, urged emerging psychologists to prioritise research, ethical standards, and technological literacy. They reaffirmed the Association’s commitment to mentoring students and strengthening professional excellence within the discipline.
The combined induction and conference provided a platform for knowledge exchange and professional networking, while highlighting the strategic importance of integrating psychological science with advancements in artificial intelligence to address complex societal challenges.
