The Pro Chancellor and Chairman of the 13th Governing Council of Lagos State University, Mr Babatunde Ogala, SAN, OFR, has charged staff of the Lagos State University College of Medicine to strengthen their focus on research and innovation to enhance the institution’s global standing.
Ogala gave the charge on March 2, 2026, during the Council’s annual tour of the university’s campuses, when members visited the Ikeja Campus, home to the College of Medicine. Addressing staff at the Medical Sciences Building Auditorium, he stressed that cutting edge research, strategic collaborations, and innovative thinking are vital to elevating both the College and the University on the national and international stage.
He urged the academic community to produce ground breaking research capable of attracting global attention and meaningful partnerships. According to him, the Governing Council has developed a strategic framework aimed at boosting research output, expanding partnerships, and improving access to grants and external funding. He assured staff of the Council’s readiness to support initiatives that enhance the visibility and reputation of the University.
In her remarks, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji Bello, called for total commitment to resource assessment and accreditation processes, noting that the sustainability and credibility of the College depend heavily on successful accreditation outcomes.
Earlier, the Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Olufemi Idowu, informed the Council that the College comprises 32 departments, six faculties, and seven professional programmes, playing a critical role in training doctors, pharmacists, and medical laboratory scientists.
He disclosed that preparations were ongoing for resource assessment and accreditation across all professional programmes, describing the Council’s visit as timely and encouraging.
Professor Idowu also highlighted ongoing phased expansion projects at the Yaba and Gbagada annexes, including facility upgrades and a 90 bed hostel under renovation. While acknowledging existing challenges, he assured the Council that internal systems were being strengthened to maintain quality standards.
The delegation toured several facilities within the Medical Sciences Building, including laboratories, departmental libraries, the Information Unit, the Biomedical Communications Centre, the Departments of Physiology and Anatomy, the Faculty of Dentistry, and the Clinical Skills Laboratories, where an exit meeting was held.
Ogala commended the College’s management for prudent resource utilisation and reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to addressing identified needs. He praised the Provost and management team for their leadership and dedication, adding that the final phase of the Council’s tour would take place at the Epe Campus on a date to be announced.
