The management of Ekiti State University (EKSU) has dismissed an online report claiming that the institution has been in total darkness for the past ten years, describing the statement as misleading, malicious, and factually incorrect.
In a statement issued on March 8, 2026, the university said the claim circulating on social media by a blogger was a clear misrepresentation intended to discredit the institution. The management insisted that the allegation does not reflect the actual situation on campus.
According to the university, while EKSU, like many institutions in Nigeria, occasionally experiences irregular electricity supply from the Benin Electricity Distribution Company (BEDC), it has consistently implemented measures to mitigate the impact. The institution explained that alternative power sources such as generating sets and solar energy systems are deployed to complement public electricity supply and ensure that essential facilities remain functional.
The management added that through these measures, electricity continues to power offices, laboratories, auditoria, and other key academic facilities within the university. It argued that if the campus had truly been without electricity for a decade, the institution would not have maintained its academic standing and recognition as one of Nigeria’s leading state universities in recent years.
The statement also highlighted efforts by the Ekiti State Government under the leadership of Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji to improve electricity supply to the university. According to the management, steps are already underway to extend power from the state’s Independent Power Project directly to the university’s main power source.
Furthermore, the university clarified that EKSU was established as a non-residential institution, meaning that most students live in privately owned hostels located in nearby communities such as Iworoko-Ekiti. The management emphasized that electricity challenges in such private accommodations cannot be attributed to the university administration or the state government.
EKSU therefore urged the public, students, and alumni to disregard the circulating report as fake news, reaffirming its commitment to maintaining a conducive learning and working environment for both staff and students. The statement was signed by Adedoyin Ayobami on behalf of the Directorate of Information and Corporate Affairs.
