The Federal Ministry of Education has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to strengthening education reforms and expanding opportunities for young Nigerians during the celebration of Commonwealth Day 2026.
The event, held at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja, brought together stakeholders in the education sector to reflect on the role of education in promoting sustainable development and prosperity across member countries of the Commonwealth of Nations.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Minister of Education, Maruf Tunji Alausa, said the 2026 theme, “Unlocking Opportunities Together for a Prosperous Commonwealth,” aligns with the policy direction of the administration of Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
According to the minister, the government’s Renewed Hope Agenda places strong emphasis on education reform, innovation, human capital development, and inclusive economic growth.
Alausa also highlighted the Federal Government’s focus on Technical and Vocational Education and Training as a major driver of national development.
He disclosed that about 250,000 Nigerians are currently enrolled in programmes across technical colleges, skills centres and accredited vocational institutions where they are gaining industry-relevant skills for the modern workforce.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Abel Enitan, described education as a vital tool for unlocking opportunities, reducing inequality and advancing national development.
Enitan added that Nigeria would continue to strengthen partnerships with other Commonwealth countries to promote learning, research collaboration and youth empowerment initiatives.
