The appointment of Professor Segun Aina as the new Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has continued to attract commendations, with stakeholders describing it as a strong indication of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s confidence in young Nigerian professionals with proven competence and reform-driven leadership capacity.
A public affairs commentator, Ibrahim Aliu, who reacted to the appointment, described the emergence of the 39-year-old scholar and examination systems expert as a bold move capable of strengthening innovation, digital transformation and institutional efficiency within Nigeria’s education sector.
Aliu stated that the appointment reflects the Federal Government’s growing preference for merit, technological expertise and youthful leadership in strategic public institutions, particularly at a period when the nation’s education system requires urgent reforms.
According to him, Professor Aina’s elevation to lead one of Nigeria’s most important educational agencies demonstrates that competence, vision and capacity for service can outweigh age considerations in national appointments.
He noted that the appointment aligns with previous decisions by the Tinubu administration to entrust younger professionals with critical national responsibilities, citing appointments such as Mustapha Abdullahi as Director-General of the Energy Commission of Nigeria, Jennifer Adighije as Managing Director of the Niger Delta Power Holding Company, and Zacch Adedeji as Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service.
Aliu further explained that Professor Aina, a lecturer in the Department of Computer Engineering at Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, has built a strong reputation in digital systems development, institutional reforms and examination management.
He added that many education stakeholders believe the new registrar possesses the technical knowledge and administrative experience required to address some of JAMB’s major operational challenges, including examination security, digital transformation, result integrity and improved accessibility for candidates across the country.
“With millions of candidates participating in JAMB examinations annually, the institution occupies a strategic position within Nigeria’s higher education framework. This makes the office of the Registrar one of immense national importance,” Aliu stated.
He stressed that the appointment comes at a crucial moment when stakeholders are demanding technologically driven leadership capable of modernising examination systems and restoring public confidence in educational institutions.
Aliu also observed that the appointment carries symbolic significance for many Nigerian youths, especially at a time when younger professionals are increasingly seeking opportunities to contribute meaningfully to governance and national development.
According to him, Nigeria’s youthful population requires leaders and public officials who understand modern realities, technological innovation and the expectations of younger generations navigating a rapidly changing global economy.
He argued that Professor Aina’s emergence could inspire many young Nigerians within the academic and technology sectors to pursue excellence and national service with greater commitment.
The commentator maintained that reforms in educational institutions can only succeed when competent professionals with practical experience and innovative thinking are allowed to occupy strategic leadership positions.
