The Federal Government has taken a fresh step toward implementing the 2025 agreement reached with the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) by inaugurating an Implementation Monitoring Committee (IMC) to oversee compliance with the pact and sustain industrial peace in the nation’s university system.
The committee, inaugurated in Abuja by the Minister of State for Education, Prof. Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, is expected to track the execution of all provisions contained in the agreement, ensure adherence to agreed timelines, and promote accountability among stakeholders.
Prof. Ahmad described the committee’s inauguration as a significant move towards strengthening stability in tertiary education, noting that the body would serve as a mechanism for monitoring progress, resolving implementation challenges, and fostering continuous engagement between the government and university stakeholders.
She said the successful negotiation and signing of the agreement reflected the willingness of both parties to embrace dialogue and collaborative reforms aimed at improving the quality and sustainability of higher education in Nigeria.
Also speaking at the event, the Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Abel Enitan, said the committee would play a vital role in reinforcing transparency and accountability in the implementation process. He urged members to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, fairness, and dedication.
Chairman of the committee, Olarewaju Tejuoso, assured stakeholders of the panel’s commitment to carrying out its mandate diligently, promising an open and transparent process.
ASUU President, Prof. Chris Piwuna, welcomed the development and stressed the need for consistent engagement between both parties, calling for regular meetings to address emerging issues and maintain mutual trust.
The Federal Government reaffirmed its resolve to fully implement the 2025 FGN-ASUU agreement, expressing confidence that the monitoring framework would help strengthen industrial harmony and support the long-term development of Nigeria’s university sector.
