The Edo State Government has ordered the immediate closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following intelligence reports warning of a possible kidnapping plot targeting students in the area.
The affected schools are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School, and Makeke Secondary School.
The directive was issued by the Ministry of Education in response to security advisories indicating credible threats to the safety of students, teachers and surrounding communities. Authorities said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to protect lives and prevent any security breach.
The development follows intelligence reportedly provided by the Department of State Services (DSS), which uncovered an alleged plan by suspected bandits to abduct schoolchildren in parts of Edo North Senatorial District.
According to security reports, suspected criminals were said to have shifted focus to schools after previous attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals failed to generate significant financial returns. Investigators also revealed that a suspect was arrested while allegedly carrying out surveillance around Makeke Secondary School, raising concerns that plans for the operation were already underway.
In response, security agencies recommended increased protection around schools, stronger collaboration with local vigilante groups and hunters, as well as intensified surveillance across vulnerable communities.
Despite the closure, the government assured that candidates currently writing the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) would continue to sit for their papers under enhanced security arrangements.
The Ministry directed school principals to ensure the safe release of students to their parents and guardians while securing school facilities pending further directives.
Parents and residents of the affected communities have also been urged to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to address the threat and restore normal academic activities.
