The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has commenced an investigation into reports of alleged contamination of water supplied to some student hostels following complaints of vomiting, stooling and other health concerns among students.
In a statement issued on Wednesday by the Head of the Communication Unit, Mrs Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, the university said management had launched a comprehensive assessment of its water supply system, including laboratory tests, to determine the accuracy of the reports and identify any potential health risks.
The institution noted that the matter was being treated with urgency, assuring students, staff and other members of the university community that immediate measures had been put in place to safeguard their health and welfare while investigations continue.
The development comes amid concerns raised by students, particularly residents of some female hostels, who alleged that the quality of water supplied may have contributed to cases of vomiting, stooling and skin-related reactions.
Meanwhile, the University of Lagos Students’ Union said no definitive link had been established between the reported illnesses and the hostel water supply. In a statement signed by its President, Akinpelu Bolaji, the union said medical personnel at the University Medical Centre had not medically connected the reported cases to the water supply, noting that some affected students reside off campus.
The union, however, disclosed that an inspection carried out after reports of discoloured water in one hostel block traced the problem to a borehole serving the affected facility. It said the university had suspended water supply from the source and made alternative arrangements for students residing in the block.
According to the Students’ Union, water samples have been collected from hostels for laboratory analysis, with results expected within 48 hours. The union urged students to remain calm and avoid speculation while awaiting the outcome of the investigation.
Management said further updates would be communicated through official channels as findings emerge from the ongoing assessment.
