Yakubu Gowon University, Abuja, has approved the promotion of 34 academic staff to professorial positions in a move aimed at strengthening teaching, research and academic leadership across the institution.
The promotion, approved by the university’s Governing Council, saw 18 lecturers elevated to the rank of Professor, while 16 others were promoted to Associate Professor after successfully meeting the institution’s rigorous academic and external assessment requirements.
The university said the newly promoted academics were drawn from various faculties and disciplines, reflecting its commitment to rewarding excellence in scholarship, innovation, community service and knowledge production.
Announcing the promotions, the Acting Director of Information and University Relations, Dr. Habib Yakoob, explained that the exercise followed a comprehensive evaluation process, including external assessment of the candidates’ academic publications, teaching contributions, research output and professional service.
Vice-Chancellor Professor Hakeem Fawehinmi congratulated the promoted academics, describing their elevation as recognition of years of dedication, perseverance and outstanding contributions to higher education.
He noted that promotion to the professorial cadre carries greater responsibility for mentoring younger academics, expanding the university’s research profile and providing intellectual leadership within and beyond the institution.
According to him, the university remains committed to recognising merit and creating an environment where excellence in teaching, research and community engagement is rewarded.
Professor Fawehinmi encouraged the newly promoted professors and associate professors to sustain the culture of academic excellence by producing impactful research, attracting international collaborations and contributing to national development through innovative scholarship.
The latest promotions come as Yakubu Gowon University continues implementing reforms aimed at strengthening its academic reputation, improving research productivity and enhancing staff development.
In recent months, the institution has recorded significant milestones, including the appointment of substantive principal officers and increased investment in research and academic infrastructure as part of its strategic development agenda.
The elevation of the 34 lecturers is expected to expand the university’s pool of senior academics, improve postgraduate supervision, strengthen research mentorship and support the delivery of high-quality teaching across its faculties.
