Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, has reinforced its commitment to promoting holistic education by organising a campus-wide fitness exercise for part-time students of the Department of Religious and Development Studies, with the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebunoluwa Oduwole, personally leading the physical training session.
The exercise, held on Friday at the university’s sports pavilion, fulfilled a commitment made by the Vice-Chancellor during the students’ welcome programme earlier in the week to provide an enriching academic experience that extends beyond classroom learning to include physical, social and spiritual development.
Dressed in full sports attire, Professor Oduwole joined the students on the field, participating actively in the fitness routine and demonstrating the importance of healthy living through personal example. Her participation underscored the university’s belief that academic excellence should be complemented by physical well-being and a healthy lifestyle.
The session, supervised by the university’s Chief Coach, Dr Sunday Omobhude, featured a series of aerobic exercises designed to improve flexibility, endurance and overall physical fitness. Participants were also led on a jog around the university campus to enhance cardiovascular health while encouraging regular exercise as an essential part of daily life.
Speaking during the exercise, Professor Oduwole reaffirmed the university’s commitment to nurturing well-rounded graduates, noting that education should develop the body, mind and character simultaneously. She explained that the fitness programme forms part of the institution’s broader vision of holistic student development and reflects the philosophy she has championed since assuming office as the university’s first female and fifth substantive Vice-Chancellor.
Although the workout was physically demanding, many of the students expressed satisfaction with the experience, describing it as refreshing and inspiring. They noted that the exercise provided an opportunity not only to improve their physical health but also to interact more closely with the university leadership and fellow students outside the classroom environment.
The event attracted several principal officers of the university, including the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Professor Afolake Olanbiwonninu; the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Olukayode Binuyo; the University Librarian, Professor Bose Ajiboye; and the Head of the Department of Religious and Development Studies, Ven. Dr Ayo Ogidiolu. Officials of the Sports Unit and the Public Relations Office also participated in the exercise.
The university disclosed that the fitness programme marks the beginning of a series of activities planned for the part-time students. Other engagements scheduled include a networking dinner, praise and worship sessions, and a prayer walk aimed at strengthening social interaction, spiritual growth and community bonding among participants.
By integrating physical fitness, spiritual engagement and social interaction into the student experience, Ajayi Crowther University continues to promote a model of education that prioritises the overall well-being of learners while preparing them for responsible leadership and productive contributions to society.
