The management of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) has issued a strong directive to private hostel operators affiliated with the institution, ordering them to immediately halt the collection of accommodation fees for the 2026/2027 academic session until the university officially releases the list of students in good academic standing.
The decision, announced by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Wahab Olasupo Egbewole, SAN, is aimed at safeguarding students from making premature financial commitments before the university completes the academic processes that determine their eligibility to continue their studies in the new session.
Speaking during a meeting with private hostel owners on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, Professor Egbewole expressed concern over reports that some operators had begun accepting advance accommodation payments ahead of the university’s official clearance procedures.
According to the Vice-Chancellor, such actions have the potential to create unnecessary hardship for students and parents, particularly where students who have not yet been confirmed to be in good academic standing make payments for accommodation they may ultimately be unable to occupy.
He stressed that the university’s Senate remains the only authority empowered to determine and publish the official list of students eligible to proceed into the next academic session, noting that any attempt to collect hostel fees before the completion of that process undermines established institutional procedures.
Professor Egbewole described the practice as inconsistent with the orderly administration of the university and cautioned hostel operators against taking actions capable of interfering with academic regulations or creating confusion among students.
To address the situation, the Vice-Chancellor directed every hostel operator who had already received advance payments from students to refund the money within 72 hours, emphasising that compliance with the directive was expected across all privately managed student hostels associated with the institution.
The directive reflects the university’s broader commitment to protecting the interests of students while ensuring that academic and administrative procedures are respected by all stakeholders connected to the institution.
Observers note that accommodation remains one of the most significant concerns for many university students, particularly in institutions with large enrolment figures where demand for hostel spaces often exceeds available capacity. Responding on behalf of the hostel operators, the Chairman of their association, Mr Williams Adedeji, acknowledged the university’s concerns and assured the Vice-Chancellor of the association’s readiness to comply fully with the directive.
He pledged that members of the association would respect the university’s position and ensure that all affected operators adhere to the refund order and future guidelines issued by the institution.
