Forty-six graduates of the Bachelor of Nursing Science (BNSc) programme at the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM) have been formally inducted into the nursing profession, with the Lagos State University (LASU) management and the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) charging them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism, ethics and compassionate healthcare.
The charge was delivered during the 7th Induction and Oath-Taking Ceremony held on Friday, July 31, 2026, at the Medical Sciences Building Auditorium, LASUCOM.
Representing the Vice-Chancellor of LASU, Professor Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello (mni, NPOM), the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics), Professor Oseni Afisi, reminded the newly inducted nurses that their certificates symbolise more than academic achievement.
“Your certificates are a badge of responsibility, a call to serve and a covenant to uphold the highest standards of ethics,” he said, adding that LASU remains committed to producing graduates distinguished by competence, integrity and professional excellence.
The Registrar and Chief Executive Officer of the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN), Dr. Ndaji Alhassan, represented by Dr. Umar Gambo, congratulated the graduates and urged them to make the knowledge, clinical skills and experiences acquired during their training the foundation of their professional practice.
He described the induction as the official beginning of their professional journey, noting that significant responsibilities now rest on their shoulders as certified polyvalent graduate nurses.
Dr. Alhassan encouraged the new professionals to embrace lifelong learning, remain open to guidance from senior colleagues during their internship and throughout their careers, and continually improve their competence through continuous professional development.
In his remarks, the Provost of LASUCOM, Professor Olufemi E. Idowu, emphasised that nursing extends beyond clinical procedures and technical competence, describing it as a profession built on human connection, empathy and service.
“Nursing is not merely a career of tasks and medications. It is a profound human connection,” he said, urging the graduates to combine intellectual excellence with compassion in delivering quality healthcare.
The Provost also acknowledged the sacrifices and unwavering support of parents, families, lecturers, mentors and other stakeholders who contributed to the graduates’ successful academic journey.
Goodwill messages were delivered by the Chief Medical Director of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Professor Adetokunbo O. Fabanwo, and the Director of Nursing Services, Lagos State Health Service Commission, Nurse Adebukola O. Cole, who encouraged the newly inducted nurses to continue building their knowledge, demonstrate compassion in patient care and remain resilient in the face of professional challenges.
The ceremony concluded with the presentation of academic awards to outstanding graduates.
