Parents and students in Lagos State have about five weeks to prepare for the commencement of the 2026/2027 academic session, with public and private primary and secondary schools scheduled to resume on Monday, September 14, 2026.

The September resumption date is contained in the 2026/2027 Harmonised Academic Calendar approved by the Lagos State Government for schools across the state.

With the new session approaching, schools, parents and students are expected to begin preparations ahead of the reopening date, including completion of school administrative requirements and other arrangements for the new academic year.

The approved calendar provides for three terms, with the first term running from September 14 to December 21, 2026.

Students will have a mid-term break from November 2 to November 6, while the first term vacation will begin on December 21.

The second term is scheduled to commence on January 11, 2027, and the third term will begin on May 3, 2027.

The academic session is expected to end on Friday, July 30, 2027, after which the long vacation will commence on August 2.

Schools to prepare before resumption

Before students return, schools have also been given a window for staff professional development.

According to the approved calendar, schools are to select any two days between September 7 and September 11, 2026, for staff professional development activities.

The state government has directed both public and private schools to follow the harmonised calendar to ensure consistency in the academic year.

Schools operating international curricula that require different academic dates have also been directed to apply for calendar flexibility. The deadline for such applications is August 21, 2026.

Key dates for the new session

  • September 7–11, 2026: Staff professional development window
  • September 14, 2026: First-term resumption
  • November 2–6, 2026: First-term mid-term break
  • December 21, 2026: First-term vacation begins
  • January 11, 2027: Second-term resumption

The government said the harmonised calendar was developed following consultations with education stakeholders and is intended to provide a coordinated structure for teaching and learning across Lagos schools.

For parents and students, however, the immediate date to note is September 14, when schools across the state are expected to reopen for the new academic session.

The full calendar is available through the Office of Education Quality Assurance and official Lagos State Government platforms.
