The Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) has welcomed fresh students for the 2026/2027 academic session, urging them to embrace discipline, academic excellence and responsible participation as they begin their university journey.
The university commenced its 2026/2027 Orientation Programme on Monday, September 14, 2026, as part of efforts to familiarise newly admitted students with the institution’s academic culture, rules and regulations, welfare structures and other essential aspects of university life.
The orientation programme is designed to provide the students with information on FUNAAB’s history, academic expectations, accommodation, financial procedures, library resources, healthcare services, students’ welfare and other support systems available to them throughout their studies.
Addressing the new students, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, welcomed them to the university and reaffirmed FUNAAB’s commitment to producing well-rounded graduates capable of making meaningful contributions to society.
Kehinde emphasised the importance of discipline, noting that it remained a defining value of the university and urging the students to conduct themselves responsibly. He also described FUNAAB’s reputation nationally and internationally as “second to none.”
The Vice-Chancellor reminded the students that the university’s core mandates extend beyond classroom learning to Teaching, Research and Extension Services, encouraging them to take advantage of the opportunities available to them and contribute actively to the attainment of these objectives.
He further assured the fresh students that the university management remained committed to their welfare and academic success, describing FUNAAB’s responsibility towards them as in loco parentis. He said the institution would remain available to provide guidance and support whenever necessary.
The Registrar, Dr. Titus Adeniyi, represented by the Deputy Registrar, Mr. Samson Adeniran, took the students through the history, vision and mission of the university. He stressed that both students and staff have a collective responsibility to sustain FUNAAB’s position as a leading institution of agricultural education and research in Africa.
Financial matters also featured prominently during the orientation. The Bursar, Mr. Olukayode Osinuga, represented by Mrs. Margaret Omisope, explained the university’s bursary activities and approved payment procedures, while cautioning students to verify payment channels before making financial transactions.
The students were also encouraged to utilise the instalmental payment arrangement provided by the university for school fees, as well as explore the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan scheme of the Federal Government.
At the university library, the Librarian, Prof. Abayomi Owolabi, represented by Dr. Idowu Koleade, introduced the fresh students to the range of library services and resources available to them. He urged them to make effective use of the facilities to strengthen their studies, research activities and pursuit of academic excellence.
The Dean of Student Affairs, Prof. Festus Adeosun, meanwhile, warned the students against negative peer influence, drug and substance abuse, advising them to build positive relationships and abide by the rules and regulations governing the university community.
The Student Union President, Comrade Soga Oluwatimileyin, encouraged the new students to participate actively in intellectual and literary activities that could contribute to their personal development. He, however, reminded them to remain focused on the primary academic purpose for which they gained admission.
Further guidance was provided by the Director of Health Services, Dr. Oluseyi Anjorin, represented by Dr. Nasir Oyelekan, and the Deputy Dean, Student Affairs Division, Dr. Mathew Whetto, who addressed issues relating to healthcare, welfare and a successful transition into university life.
Beyond the formal sessions, the orientation programme also featured performances by the FUNAAB Cultural Troupe and comedian Davinci, giving the new students an opportunity to experience the cultural and social dimensions of university life.
With the 2026/2027 academic session now underway, the orientation programme has placed emphasis on the need for fresh students to combine academic ambition with discipline, responsible conduct, effective use of university resources and active participation in the wider intellectual life of the institution.
For the new students, the message from FUNAAB management was clear: university education should go beyond obtaining a degree to developing the knowledge, character, skills and sense of responsibility required to contribute meaningfully to society.
