A Nigerian academic, Dr Ayodele Temidayo Odularu, who worked as an independent senior researcher at the University of Fort Hare in South Africa, has died at the age of 51, with her family seeking an investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death.
Odularu reportedly died on August 16, 2026, at her residence in the Eastern Cape Province. Her brother, Dr Gbadebo Odularu, disclosed the development to Diaspora Tales, following the launch of a GoFundMe campaign connected to the family.
A family member, who spoke anonymously, said her death was not from natural causes, but the circumstances remain unclear. The family has called for an investigation. No further details about the cause of death or the progress of any investigation were provided in the report.
University Pays Tribute to Researcher
The University of Fort Hare held a memorial service on Thursday to honour Odularu and reflect on her academic contributions and commitment to research.
In a tribute shared in connection with her passing, she was remembered for work addressing issues affecting communities, including access to knowledge, educational opportunities and sustainable development.
The statement also described her as a mentor and a source of encouragement, highlighting her kindness, generosity, resilience and commitment to uplifting others.
Family Remembers Her as a Mentor and Scholar
The family’s GoFundMe statement described Odularu as a cherished daughter, sister, aunt, friend and mentor whose life touched those around her.
It said she was known for her compassion, wisdom and strength, adding that she had a special ability to make people feel valued, heard and inspired.
Her work as a scholar was also recognised for its focus on knowledge, discovery and efforts to create better opportunities for communities.
Odularu’s death has brought renewed attention to the personal and professional contributions of Nigerian academics working outside the country. However, the circumstances of her passing remain unresolved in the information publicly reported so far.
As the family seeks answers, further official information about the investigation and the cause of death is awaited.
