Lagos State University (LASU) has announced the opening of applications for the 2026/2027 Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) student loan, urging eligible students to complete the process before the December 31, 2026 deadline.
The university disclosed this in a statement published through its official communication channels, confirming that the application portal opened on Wednesday, September 23, 2026, and will remain accessible until Thursday, December 31, 2026.
The development provides another opportunity for eligible LASU students to access the Federal Government’s student financing intervention for the new academic session as the university prepares for the continuation of the 2026/2027 academic year.
According to LASU, applicants must be duly registered students of the university and possess valid Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) registration numbers, National Identification Numbers (NIN) and Bank Verification Numbers (BVN).
The university also stressed the importance of ensuring that students’ institutional records are accurate before they begin their applications.
Students are expected to confirm that their matriculation numbers, departments and other relevant academic information have been correctly uploaded and updated on the LASU portal.
LASU further advised applicants to verify their JAMB information before proceeding with the NELFUND application, warning that discrepancies between students’ institutional records and the information supplied during the application process could result in delays or disqualification.
The university’s emphasis on data verification reflects the importance of accurate student information in the processing of education financing. Applicants with inconsistent records may therefore need to resolve such issues before submitting their loan applications.
Students who experience difficulties verifying or updating their information have been directed to seek assistance from the Directorate of ICT or the Directorate of Special Interventions at the university.
LASU urged all qualified students who intend to benefit from the loan scheme to begin the process early rather than wait until the closing date.
The announcement is particularly relevant to students seeking financial support as they navigate tuition and other education-related costs associated with the new academic session.
The opening of the application also places responsibility on students to ensure that their personal, JAMB and university records correspond before submitting their applications, as the university has specifically identified data mismatches as a potential source of processing difficulties.
For LASU students, the key dates are therefore September 23, 2026, when the application window opened, and December 31, 2026, when the application period closes.
The university has consequently advised eligible students to use the period available to complete their verification and submit their applications rather than risk missing the deadline.
As the 2026/2027 academic session progresses, the NELFUND scheme continues to serve as an important component of Nigeria’s evolving approach to financing access to tertiary education, with universities playing a critical role in ensuring that accurate student records are available for the processing of applications.
For LASU students intending to apply, the immediate priority is to confirm their eligibility, verify their JAMB and institutional details, ensure that their NIN and BVN information is valid, and complete the application before the December 31, 2026 deadline.
