The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has appointed Mr Suleiman Danlami Kum as the new Head of its Nigeria National Office, succeeding Dr Amos Josiah Dangut.
Kum, who joined WAEC in 1998, is a seasoned examination administrator and test developer with extensive experience across the council’s operations, including examination security, branch administration, test administration and management.
Born on October 16, 1970, in Minna, Niger State, Kum is from Langtang North Local Government Area of Plateau State.
He obtained his General Certificate of Education (GCE) from Baptist High School, Jos, in 1986/1987 before earning a Bachelor of Agriculture in Animal Production from the University of Agriculture, Makurdi, in 1992, where he graduated with Second Class Honours (Upper Division).
He later obtained a Post Graduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) from the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) in 2025 and is currently completing a Master’s degree in Educational Administration and Planning at the university.
Kum began his professional career in 1993 during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) deployment to the Division of Agricultural Colleges, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he served as Head of the Animal Production Unit.
Between 1995 and 1998, he worked at Baptist High School, Jos, where he held positions including Form Master, Labour Master, Classroom Teacher and Health Master. He received the school’s Light and Life Staff Merit Award in 1998 before joining WAEC.
He joined the examination council on July 17, 1998, as Assistant Registrar II and subsequently rose through the ranks, becoming Senior Deputy Registrar in 2024.
His career at WAEC has included postings as Assistant Registrar II and Head of Exams Security in Awka; Assistant Registrar I and Head of Exams Security in Yola and Makurdi; Senior Assistant Registrar and Branch Controller in Gusau; Principal Assistant Registrar and Branch Controller in Kano; Deputy Registrar and Head of the Security Printing Department; Deputy Registrar and Zonal Coordinator in Port Harcourt and Ikeja; Director of Administration; and Senior Deputy Registrar/Test Administration.
Before his latest appointment, Kum served as Senior Deputy Registrar/Test Administration from September 2025 to August 2026.
His appointment comes as WAEC continues to oversee the administration and development of secondary school examinations in Nigeria, including the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
Kum is expected to take over the leadership of the Nigeria National Office following the tenure of Dangut, who served as the council’s Nigeria National Office head.
