A United States-based journalist and documentary filmmaker, Neenma Ebeledike, has instituted an annual ₦200,000 prize for the best graduating student in the Department of Mass Communication at Redeemer’s University, Ede, Osun State, in a move aimed at rewarding academic excellence and encouraging emerging media professionals.
The award, known as the Neenma Ebeledike Prize for the Best Graduating Mass Communication Student, comes with a cash reward, a commemorative plaque and a copy of Ebeledike’s guidebook on grants, scholarships and fellowships, designed to help students identify and pursue further academic and professional opportunities.
Adeola Holo has emerged as the inaugural recipient of the prize, which is expected to become an annual feature recognising outstanding academic performance in the department.
The initiative has received commendation from the university’s management and the Department of Mass Communication, with officials describing the gesture as a valuable contribution to the institution and an encouragement to students pursuing careers in communication and journalism.
The Registrar of Redeemer’s University, Mr David Akintola, expressed appreciation to Ebeledike for establishing the award, saying, “The University appreciates your generosity and kind support and prays that the Redeemer Himself will continue to prosper you on all sides. Amen.”
Professor Felix Talabi of the Department of Mass Communication also commended the alumna, describing the initiative as an important source of motivation for students and a positive development for the department’s alumni network.
“First, on behalf of the Department, I’d like to say thank you for instituting the prize. It means a lot to us and to me especially. You have encouraged and motivated us in more ways than you know. You have also started something in the mass communication alumni network that will yield such great results,” Talabi said.
The establishment of the prize comes six years after Ebeledike made history in 2020 as the first Mass Communication student to emerge as the overall best graduating student of Redeemer’s University. She said that experience influenced her decision to create a lasting mechanism for recognising students who demonstrate exceptional academic commitment in the discipline.
According to Ebeledike, her decision was informed by firsthand knowledge of the demands of studying Mass Communication, a field that requires students to combine strong writing skills with critical thinking, analysis, creativity and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively.
“People often celebrate excellent results without fully understanding what it takes to achieve them. I know firsthand how difficult it is to graduate with an outstanding result, let alone emerge as the best in a department like mass communication, where so much of your academic performance depends on writing, critical thinking, analysis, creativity, and assessments that do not always have one straightforward answer,” she said.
She added that excellent academic performance often comes with sacrifices that are not immediately visible to others, including sleepless nights, demanding assignments, moments of self-doubt and the discipline required to remain consistent throughout a programme.
“Behind every excellent result are sacrifices people may never see. There are sleepless nights, countless assignments, moments of self-doubt, and the discipline to keep showing up and giving your best. I want this prize to recognise that effort,” Ebeledike said.
Beyond celebrating academic results, the award is intended to encourage students to recognise the value of their education and prepare for opportunities beyond the university environment. The accompanying guidebook on grants, scholarships and fellowships is particularly significant because it gives the recipient access to information that may support further study, professional development and applications for funding.
Ebeledike said the initiative was her way of giving back to the department that helped shape her academic and professional journey. She expressed hope that future recipients would see the prize as recognition of their hard work and encouragement to pursue their ambitions.
“This is my way of giving back to a department that played an important role in shaping who I am today. I hope that years from now, a student will receive this prize and feel that their effort has been seen, their sacrifices have been worth it, and their dreams are worth pursuing,” she said.
Since graduating from Redeemer’s University, Ebeledike has developed a career spanning journalism, documentary filmmaking, photography and multimedia storytelling. She obtained a master’s degree in journalism from the University of California, Berkeley, in the United States and currently works as a multimedia journalist with The Sacramento Observer in California.
Her reporting and documentary work have focused on underrepresented communities, social issues and stories intended to encourage public understanding and meaningful change. Her professional trajectory illustrates the range of opportunities available to graduates of Mass Communication programmes, extending beyond conventional newsroom reporting to documentary production, visual storytelling and multimedia journalism.
The prize also comes at a time when journalism and communication graduates are navigating an increasingly complex media environment shaped by digital platforms, multimedia production, audience analytics and changing patterns of information consumption. Strong academic foundations, practical skills and access to professional development opportunities can help graduates prepare for these demands.
For Redeemer’s University, the award represents an example of how alumni can contribute to their former institutions through targeted initiatives that directly recognise students’ efforts. While financial support can provide immediate encouragement, the inclusion of the guidebook also gives the prize a developmental dimension by connecting academic achievement with future opportunities.
The sustainability of the initiative will depend on its continuation in subsequent years and its ability to inspire other graduates to contribute to their departments and institutions. If maintained, the award could become a lasting tradition that celebrates excellence, strengthens alumni engagement and encourages students to combine academic achievement with professional ambition.
Through the annual prize, Ebeledike is seeking to ensure that outstanding students in Mass Communication are recognised for the work behind their results and encouraged to pursue opportunities that can broaden their impact as future journalists, communicators and storytellers.
