The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS), Ogun State Joint Campus Committee (JCC), has given the management of the Federal Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital, Aro, Abeokuta, 24 hours to explain the circumstances surrounding the death of a student reportedly suffering from asthma.
The student body issued the ultimatum on Saturday, warning that it could mobilise students across Ogun State for a protest at the hospital if management failed to provide a satisfactory explanation.
In a statement signed by its Ogun JCC chairman, Olabode Faruq, NANS said the reported death had raised concerns about the medical attention the student received, emergency response procedures and the hospital’s available facilities.
The association alleged that inadequate medical equipment and concerns about the competence of personnel involved in the student’s care may have contributed to the incident. However, it did not provide details of the student’s identity or the circumstances leading to the death.
NANS called on the hospital management to publicly explain the treatment provided to the student before his death and urged the Nigerian Medical Association, relevant security agencies and medical regulatory authorities to investigate the incident.
It also demanded an independent autopsy review to establish the cause of death and determine whether any negligence or failure in medical care was involved. The association said any such process should be conducted by qualified professionals and in accordance with the law.
The student body further appealed to the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Iziaq Adekunle Salako, to intervene and ensure that the matter receives urgent attention.
Beyond the specific case, NANS called for an assessment of the hospital’s medical facilities, emergency response capacity and the professional qualifications of personnel responsible for patient care. It urged the relevant authorities to address any deficiencies identified during the review.
The association said it would consider organising a protest at the facility if the hospital failed to respond within the 24-hour period, insisting that the circumstances surrounding the student’s death must be investigated transparently.
“The life of a Nigerian student matters, and allegations surrounding the circumstances of his death deserve immediate answers,” the statement said.
The allegations have not been independently verified. The hospital’s response to the ultimatum and the circumstances surrounding the student’s death were not included in the statement issued by NANS.
