A 400-level Nursing student at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ogun State, Awoyemi Covenant, has won the Best Research Innovation of the Year award at the 2026 NextGen Innovation Challenge in London, United Kingdom.
Covenant represented Nigeria at the competition’s grand finale, held from October 7 to 11, after progressing through a national innovation programme that attracted more than 2,900 participants.
OOU announced the achievement on its social media page on Monday, congratulating the student on her performance at the international event.
According to the university, Covenant first represented Ogun State at the national showcase in Abuja, where she competed alongside more than 2,900 participants in the innovation programme.
She was subsequently selected among 70 candidates for the grand finale in London, where she received the award for Best Research Innovation of the Year.
Her project is a biodigester appliance designed to convert livestock waste into biogas, a renewable energy source that can be used for cooking and other energy needs.
The innovation explores how animal waste can be put to productive use, with potential benefits for waste management and access to alternative energy sources.
The award marks an international achievement for the OOU student, whose project was selected from a pool of candidates shortlisted after the national-level programme.
