Governor of Ondo State, Mr. Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has approved the recruitment of 1,100 primary school teachers across the state’s 18 local government areas. This follows a similar move earlier this month, when the governor approved the employment of 1,010 secondary school teachers, marking a significant step towards addressing the long-standing shortage of qualified educators in the state.
This recruitment drive comes after nearly 18 years since the last major teacher employment in the state, highlighting the importance of filling the critical gaps in the state’s public primary and secondary schools.
The recruitment process has now been finalized, and the approval was disclosed by the Director of Information and Public Relations of the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Mr. Bolu Ajijo, in a statement on Sunday. Ajijo confirmed that the governor’s decision followed a thorough recruitment process aimed at addressing the shortage of teachers caused by those leaving the public service and other staffing challenges.
“As part of efforts to address the shortage of teachers in Ondo State’s public primary schools, Governor Aiyedatiwa has approved the recruitment of 1,100 teachers by the Ondo State Universal Basic Education Board,” Ajijo said in the statement.
The move follows the approval made earlier in March 2025, when Governor Aiyedatiwa greenlit the recruitment of 1,010 secondary school teachers through the Ondo State Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM).
The latest recruitment effort comes after a significant gap of nearly two decades, with only limited, smaller-scale employment drives held in between. These previous efforts were unable to meet the growing demand for qualified teachers, underscoring the need for the current large-scale recruitment initiative.
Mr. Victor Olabitan, the Executive Chairman of SUBEB, praised the governor’s timely approval, stating that the new teachers would help fill the gaps created by retirements and other shortages, thus improving the quality of education in the state.
This recruitment initiative highlights Governor Aiyedatiwa’s ongoing commitment to strengthening the education sector in Ondo State, ensuring that schools are adequately staffed to cater to the educational needs of students across the state
