Panic and uncertainty gripped Sokoto State University (SSU) as a fierce fire tore through one of the newly constructed female hostels, reducing sections of the building to ashes. The sudden blaze, which erupted in the late hours, left the university community in shock as flames engulfed the facility meant to ease accommodation challenges for students.
Miraculously, no casualties were recorded, as the affected hostel had been vacated prior to the incident. University authorities had reportedly instructed all occupants to leave the premises, though the reason for this directive remains undisclosed. This unexpected evacuation has fuelled speculation about whether there were underlying structural concerns before the fire broke out.
Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as thick black smoke billowed into the sky while flames devoured the building with alarming speed. The inferno raged for several hours before firefighters managed to bring it under control. By the time the fire was extinguished, much of the structure had suffered severe damage, leaving behind a grim sight of charred remains and smouldering debris.
Despite the swift intervention of emergency responders, the cause of the fire is yet to be determined. Neither the university management nor the state fire service has provided an official explanation, deepening concerns about fire safety protocols in the institution. Investigations are expected to commence immediately to uncover the root cause of the disaster.
With academic activities still ongoing, concerns have also been raised about the safety of other buildings within the university. Some students fear that inadequate fire prevention measures could put other hostels at risk, prompting calls for an urgent review of the school’s safety infrastructure.
While SSU officials have remained tight-lipped about the extent of the damage, pressure is mounting on the school to provide concrete answers and immediate solutions for affected students.
As investigations continue, the university community waits anxiously for clarity on the circumstances surrounding the fire.
